Leucorrhoea Main Cause

Leucorrhoea (Safed Pani) – Main Causes, Symptoms & Natural Treatment

Main Causes of Leucorrhoea

The primary cause of leucorrhoea is:
👉 Infection or irritation of the female genital tract.

However, this infection or irritation can occur due to several underlying factors. Let’s understand them in detail:

1. Infections (Most Common Cause)

This is the most frequent and significant reason behind leucorrhoea.

🦠 (A) Fungal Infection – Candida albicans (Yeast Infection / Thrush)

This is the most common cause of leucorrhoea.
Yeast naturally exists in the vagina, but when immunity becomes weak or antibiotics are overused, the yeast starts multiplying excessively.

Discharge: Thick, white, curd-like
Symptoms: Severe itching, burning sensation, and redness around the vaginal area.

🦠 (B) Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)

Normally, the vagina contains “good bacteria” (lactobacilli) that maintain an acidic environment.
When this balance gets disturbed, harmful bacteria start growing.

Discharge: Thin, grayish-white
Special Sign: Strong fishy odor

🦠 (C) Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)

  • Trichomoniasis (Protozoal Infection): Causes frothy, greenish discharge with a foul smell.

  • Chlamydia / Gonorrhea: Lead to yellow, pus-like discharge, pelvic pain, and sometimes fever.

2. Hormonal Imbalance

When the estrogen hormone level increases, the cervical glands produce excess mucus.
This is a common reason for milky white discharge.

It usually occurs during puberty, pregnancy, or ovulation and is known as
👉 Physiological Leucorrhoea (harmless discharge).

3. Cervical or Uterine Problems

Certain uterine or cervical issues can also cause abnormal discharge:

  • Cervical Erosion: (Wound or ulcer on the cervix) → Watery discharge

  • Polyps / Fibroids: Cause continuous discharge

  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID): Leads to pus-like discharge with pelvic pain

4. Poor Hygiene and Lifestyle Factors

Wearing tight synthetic underwear, excessive sweating, heat, or poor hygiene can increase the risk of vaginal infections.

Additionally, foreign objects like a forgotten tampon or intrauterine devices (IUDs/Copper T) may also cause foul-smelling discharge.
